OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, is making significant strides in India with its ambitious $500 billion global supercomputing project, Stargate. The company is in discussions with prominent Indian data center firms, including Sify Technologies, Yotta Data Services, E2E Networks, and CtrlS Datacenters, to establish a major data center in India with at least 1 gigawatt capacity. Additionally, OpenAI is engaging with Reliance Industries, which plans to build the world's largest data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
This move is in response to the Indian government's request for OpenAI to invest a significant portion of the Stargate project in India and store Indian user data locally. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, has acknowledged India's rapid growth and potential, stating that the country might become the company's largest market.
The establishment of a local data center is expected to reduce latency, improve service quality, and foster innovation in AI applications tailored to Indian needs. OpenAI's commitment to India is further demonstrated by its plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year, aiming to offer more affordable AI products to the Indian market.
